This article examines the cultural and media aspects of regional tourism, in the context of travel to historic cities. Using Veliky Novgorod as an example, it analyzes the modern tourist's ability to gain knowledge and impressions in this ancient city simultaneously. Introducing the concept of the tourist's role, the authors contrast it with the roles of listener, spectator, actor, and taster, demonstrating how each of these roles is realized or how various combinations of them are manifested in various tourism practices. They analyze not only classic tourism formats such as excursions but also more modern ones such as festivals, gastronomic projects, and master classes. Evaluating the practice studied as highly promising, the authors draw attention to the specifics of its media coverage, seeing it as a crucial means of updating knowledge and "producing" impressions.
