Abstract

The phenomenon of artist popularity is an important topic in the study of artistic practices. For a young artist, the problem of orientation in this field of activity, which is characterized by intense competition and divergent views on artistic practices, is determined by an understanding of the reasons that contribute to gaining and multiplying popularity. Over the past century, the world has seen many examples of outstanding artists whose works are still popular, and their work is widely studied by both professionals and non-specialists. By investigating the reasons for popularity, it is possible to use examples to assess the correlation of the development of fine art with socio-cultural processes and the artistic character of a particular era. The versatility and diversity of the nature of the success of visual artists is an important and relevant aspect of this study. The most important factors of popularity are the uniqueness of the style, the influence of the artist's personal mythology and the dynamically changing creative and cultural space. It is suggested that the popularity of the artist as a phenomenon of the cultural environment for the first time intensively manifested itself in the era of modernism and since then continues to have a serious impact on the modern cultural and artistic community. This is confirmed by the author's research of the creative biographies of V. Van Gogh, V. Kandinsky and P. Picasso, as the most striking and characteristic representatives of the artistic environment of modernism.
